Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is counted amongst the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala. The place is renowned for its rich and varied flora and fauna. The sanctuary is spanning over an area of 77 square kilometers. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary was raised to the status of a National Park in the year 1976. This decision was taken by the Government of Kerala to protect the unique fauna and flora population of the sanctuary. The place is especially known for its vast population of elephants. The attractions which add to the charisma of this place are the world-famous Idukki Arch Dam and a beautiful lake in the middle of Idukki. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary attracts a large number of tourists annually. A large number of tourists come to this place to discover the unique and diverse flora and fauna.

Geography
The landscapes of Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary are typified by steep sloping mountains, hills and valleys. The rolling hills with an average altitude range between 450m to 758 m are the main characteristics of the sanctuary’s geography. The artificial Kizhakkilachimala Lake adds on to the picturesque beauty of this wildlife sanctuary. The place is beautiful and mesmerizing that visitors can’t stop admiring the picturesque beauty.

Flora
The flora at Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary comprises of thick vegetation, which includes tropical evergreen forests, meadows, tropical semi-evergreen forests and leaf shedding forests. Some of the commonly sighted trees in the region include Kuntherekkapine, white pine, Pali, Vayana, Cheeni, Bhadraksham, rosewood and meadows of rolling grass. The vegetation of the place is lush green. It suits the inhabitants of the place, as it provides food to the herbivores and shelter to carnivores.

Fauna
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a wide variety of wildlife. While taking a walk in Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, one can surely get spectacular views of roaming herds of Elephants and Gaur. Such scenes never miss to keep the visitors captivated. Other major wildlife in the sanctuary includes Deer, Nilgiri Langurs, Leopards, Wild Dogs, Tigers, Wild Boars and Jungle Cats. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is also rich in its reptile and bird population. The sanctuary is home to a large number of King Cobras, Vipers, Kraits and non- poisonous snakes. Among birds Hornbills, Jungle Fowls, Mynas, Laughing Thrushes, Black Bulbuls, Peafowl, Woodpeckers and Kingfishers are commonly seen in the sanctuary.
