Palaruvi is situated in Thenmala in Kollam district; the word “Palaruvi” literally means ‘stream of milk’. The meaning of the name becomes clearer when one visits the waterfall, because the 299ft high waterfall looks like a stream of milk flowing. The waterfall is also referred as white horse's tail because it narrows on the top and widens on the bottom just like a horse's tail. The waterfall falls from a height of almost 300 feet forming a small pool at the bottom of the waterfall. The pool which is formed at the bottom of the waterfall becomes an ideal spot for swimming and a number of visitors do try swimming in this pond especially during monsoon. Palaruvi waterfall holds marvelous scenic beauty and normally gets high number of foot falls of tourists during the entire year. The gushing water stream which is at its peak during the monsoons attracts a large number of tourists especially during this time of the season as the waterfall stays almost dry during other seasons. The monsoon season attracts a large tourist crowd to this place because the water gushes down at high pace and the waterfall is at its full glory at this time of the year.
This place is safe for family and children as the pool is comparatively shallow for swimming of children and women. In fact there is a separate place for bathing restricted especially for women and children. There is a Palaruvi Vana Samrakshana Samiti which was created to protect this spot. However the area is a family tourist spot which has become possible with the help and vigil of local community. The water is said to be medicated as it flows down from the forest and is supposed to be a cure for many diseases. The journey to Palaruvi through the dense tropical forest is an exciting experience in itself. The place is a plethora of colors as it combines the blue of the sky with the greens of the forest and amidst these colors of nature the white burst of foam which resounds among the lush greens is a mesmerizing sight.
